The Clever Square are a band from Ravenna, Italy, but they have an American soul. You can tell by listening to “Ask The Oracle”, their first physical format EP. The EP, which came out last April, was indeed recorded with the same lo-fi approach of indie rock legends Guided by Voices, Sebadoh and Pavement, the band’s major inspirers and personal heroes.
After just six months since their debut, The Clever Square are back, this time with a full rounded project. “Natural Herbal Pills” is the first full-length album by the italians. The founding members Giacomo D’Attorre (guitar, voice) and Stefano Vespa (Bass) have recruited drummer Stefano Bacchilega and guitarist Mirko Montevecchi, to finally achieve a more defined and grown up sound. Produced by The Clever Square and Matteo Rossi at the Seahorse Studio in Ravenna, ‘Natural Herbal Pills’ sounds powerful and direct (think about Dinosaur Jr’s wall of sound), just as a good old electric guitar record should sound: as if the 90s had never finished, as if Ravenna, Italy had turned into Ravenna, Ohio.
